Our world is going through profound transformations, and the call for leaders to guide these changes with mindfulness and purpose has never been more urgent.
Yet, many leaders today have not fully unleashed their potential. They often feel torn between two roles:
- Being authentic, as they are in their personal life.
- Behaving as a “leader,” according to traditional organizational expectations.
If this duality resonates with you, this article will help you clarify your own leadership style and reconnect with your authentic self as a leader.
1. What Does “Being a Leader” Really Mean?
Internal conflicts about leadership often stem from inherited beliefs — passed down through generations or embedded in our collective unconscious — about what a leader should be and how a leader should act.
For many, leadership is still associated with authority, command, masculine traits, and a directive decision-making style. As Sarah E. Saint-Michel’s article Leader gender stereotypes and transformational leadership notes:
“The stereotype of the ‘successful leader’ is still defined in masculine terms — highlighted by the aphorism ‘Think male – Think leader.’”
In organizations, the blurred line between leadership and management roles often causes frustration. Leaders and managers may be misaligned in their positions, preventing them from fully expressing their potential.
Ask yourself:
- Who are the true leaders in your organization?
- Are they positioned to help others unleash their potential and serve the organization’s purpose?
Abraham Zaleznik’s landmark Harvard Business Review article Managers and Leaders: Are They Different? emphasizes that the core difference lies in mindset — managers focus on processes, leaders on vision and people.
2. What Does the World Need Today?
Our rapidly changing world needs leaders who empower others to co-create the future. Younger generations no longer believe in ego-driven, profit-only, opaque leadership models. They want a world where purpose and profit coexist, and where human consciousness and authenticity guide decisions.
As Blaise Pascal wrote:
“The heart has its reasons which reason knows nothing of.”
A Harvard Business Review study, 9 Out of 10 People Are Willing to Earn Less Money to Do More-Meaningful Work, found that employees would give up 23% of lifetime earnings for consistently meaningful work. Nearly 80% would choose a boss who cared about their meaning and success over a 20% pay increase.
Organizations must rethink their models to align employees’ purpose with their mission. The world needs authentic leaders who:
- Build trust
- Empower others to lead
- Serve a higher collective purpose
3. What Is Authentic Leadership?
Bill George, Harvard Business School professor, defines five key traits of authentic leaders:
- Pursue their purpose with passion
- Practice solid values
- Lead with heart and head
- Build connected relationships
- Demonstrate self-discipline
Authentic leaders are self-aware, purpose-driven, and grounded in their values. They know their strengths and weaknesses, embrace vulnerability, and use emotional intelligence to create trust. They empower others to lead from their own authenticity.
Research in Leadership & Organization Development Journal shows that employees who perceive their leaders as authentic report higher organizational commitment, job satisfaction, and happiness.
4. How to Become an Authentic Leader
Becoming an authentic leader requires self-discovery, releasing limiting beliefs, and aligning actions with values. It takes time — but the journey is transformative.
Five steps to reconnect with your authentic leadership:
- Find your Ikigaï – your “reason for being.”
- What do you love?
- What are your talents?
- What can you be paid for?
- How do you want to contribute to the world?
- Define success for yourself – personally and professionally.
- Know your values – identify your four non-negotiable values and how they show up in your work.
- Clarify your leadership identity – who you are now, and who you want to become as a leader.
- Choose your relationships intentionally – decide who you want as teammates, clients, and partners, and what kind of connections you want to build.
The Bottom Line
The world needs authentic leaders more than ever — leaders who lead with both heart and head, creating trust, meaning, and sustainable impact.
And you — what kind of leader do you want to be?
